Sun, IBM make NC plans

Sun Microsystems and IBM will give the Network Computer (NC) bandwagon some momentum by announcing new thin clients before the end of the year.

Sun is expected to show its first Java terminal at a press conference scheduled for next Tuesday. If it is the same as the prototype shown in the UK earlier this year, it will be a diskless device based on a Sun Java-dedicated processor, measuring about the size of a hardback book.

IBM meanwhile plans a 200MHz PowerPC 603e-based NC with S3-based graphics, according to sources. The product will complement the firm's recently announced entry-level Network Station device.

Sun declined to comment and an IBM spokesman was unavailable.
