Sun has unveiled a new server - codenamed "cherrystone" - which it hopes will see it compete against the lower end Intel-based server market. Officially called the Sun Fire V480, the server uses four 900 MHz UltraSparc processors and Sun claims it works up to three times faster than equivalent Intel machines. The server is a smaller relative of the successful eight-way V880 server, for which Sun issued new performance benchmarks yesterday.
