Sybase is making Singapore its new base for wireless.

The company has opened a new facility on the island-state--its first outside the United States--to serve as a testing ground for regional customer projects that involve the deployment of wireless technologies like radio frequency tracking.

Located within Sybase's existing office in Singapore, the lab will focus on trials geared toward the telecomm, health care and government sectors. The facility will be staffed by 16 workers by the end of this year, the company said in a statement.

Sybase, once a database software powerhouse, is now a proponent of mobile computing technologies. The company's product line includes embedded databases for mobile devices and development tools.

The wireless lab will be Sybase's second major investment in Singapore, the first being a software development center established in 1998.
