Singapore, 13 March 2000 - Symix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYMX), an application service provider (ASP) and provider of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications for the midmarket, announced today that it is making MRP OnLine available on the SingaporeONE network.
MRP Online is an enterprise application available on Integrated Synchronized Digital Network (ISDN).
Through this migration, Symix aims to take advantage of the high speed and high capacity platform, which uses the next generation Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cable modem technology, to deliver improved MRP OnLine performance to customers.
First launched in Singapore in 1997, MRP OnLine, a service supported by the then National Computer Board (now Infocomm Development Authority) and the Productivity and Standards Board, offered small- and medium-sized manufacturers powerful enterprise applications on a highly-affordable, subscription-based scheme.
Organizations were able to optimize their business processes by using MRP OnLine via an ISDN line and yet only invest a minimal amount based on the monthly usage of the system. Overcoming the initial adoption resistance, MRP OnLine has seen an increase of about 65% in the adoption rate in the last twelve months. To cater to -- and manage -- this increase in customer demand, partly driven by MRP OnLine's success and increase in market awareness, Symix migrated to the SingaporeONE network.
Said Barrie Williams, vice-president, Asia Pacific, Symix Inc.: "In migrating to the Singapore ONE network, we aim to maintain our leadership in providing powerful enterprise applications on the Internet to small and medium sized manufacturers based in Singapore through a highly competitive subscription based investment system".
Greater bandwidth, greater productivity
The launch of this service on SingaporeONE provides Symix' customers with not only increased performance due to increased bandwidth and speed of access, but also the ability to access MRP OnLine from their office, home or while travelling. Geographical location will not limit the access capabilities as well, with users being able to access the applications via the Internet using existing in-country ISP services.
Owned jointly by 1-Net, SingTel Magix and Singapore Cable Vision, SingaporeONE provides high speed, high capacity access to the Internet using ATM for the backbone of the network and Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) or cable modem for the user to connect to the backbone. Delivering Internet access speeds of about 512 kilobits per second (kbps) and native SingaporeONE access of up to 2500 kbps, it avoids the performance bottleneck encountered by current dial-up and other local access technology.
To access MRP OnLine on the SingaporeONE network, subscribers will be required to invest in an ADSL gateway and subscribe to an ADSL service. The ADSL network provides a built-in firewall and other security measures to maintain users' data integrity. In addition, the thin-client architecture that Symix has adopted and implemented allows for minimal transfer over the Internet and Wide Area Network (WAN) to the subscriber, thereby further significantly reducing the risk of data interception by unauthorised users.
According to Robert Horwood, general manager, South Asia: "the SingaporeONE migration provides Symix with an opportunity to bring our solutions via the Internet to the region. Accessing MRP OnLine from the offices in the region is now possible for our customers in Singapore. Similarly, we are now able to offer our MRP OnLine service to potential customers in the region as well".
