Phil Solis, wireless connectivity analyst at ABI Research, views attractively pricedchipsetsas the impetus that will drive mass acceptance of VoIP Wi-Fi. His new report, Residential VoIP Markets, places emphasis on plans by Motorola to release dual cell-Wi-Fi handsets with VoIP capability in the next few months." Although thesedevices will be aimed at the corporate market, Solis envisionsthat falling chip prices will make it feasible for consumer models of these handsets to be released "shortly therafter."
I think the enterprise-to-consumer adoption curve will take a bit longer. Tweaks will need to be made, distribution and marketing channels architected, and pricing defined. The view from here for consumer-focused VoIP handsets is more toward 4Q 2005.
