techTrader: W H Smith hoping everything clicks

Bookseller to promote e-commerce site with 'clicks and mortar' stores

W H Smith Group, the bookstore chain, says it is after 30 percent of the online book sales market, and will launch a new bookstore with online and traditional sales to help get it.

The first "clicks and mortar" store, called WHSmith, will launch in Leeds station, with further shops to open in US airports in the spring. Terminals in the shops will let users order books from WHSmith Online, and check email through the W H Smith portal site.

W H Smith is currently the second-largest online bookseller in the UK, with about 20 percent of the market; is largest and Bertelsmann's heavily-promoted is third.
