TelecityGroup has bought Manchester-based datacentre operator UK Grid for £11.7m.
The purchase will see TelecityGroup's portfolio of 27 datacentres across Europe grow to 31 with UK Grid's three facilities located in Manchester and one in London, the company announced on Friday.
“This acquisition is about accelerating our growth in the North West," TelecityGroup's UK managing director, Adriaan Oosthoek, said on Friday. "We’ve not just acquired great assets but a great team, all of whom will be moving to TelecityGroup to drive our growth in the region."
Initially, the buy will grant Telecity customers in Manchester an extra 1.5MW worth of extra IT capacity.
The acquisition is another sign that the datacentre provider is looking to locations besides London for its UK datacentres. In August it bought Ireland's Data Electronics Group for £87.6m, boosting its capacity by 4MW and in 2010 it acquired Manchester-based Internet Facilitators Limited which gave it another 1.4MW. In November the company detailed plans to expand its datacentre capacity within the UK by upping power in its Harbour Exchange datacentre by 3MW and building a new 3.5MW facility in Manchester.
