Telefonica spins up Joyent cloud with Amazon-beating guarantee

The infrastructure-as-a-service cloud uses technology from Node.js-steward Joyent to offer an uptime service-level agreement that is significantly better than that of AWS, Microsoft and Google.

Telefonica has tapped Joyent to help it provide an Amazon-beating infrastructure-as-a-service technology.

The Instant Servers infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) was announced by Telefonica Digital on Tuesday. It is backed by a service-level agreement (SLA) of 99.996-percent annual uptime, and Telefonica will financially compensate customers if it drops below this.

The SLA indicates Telefonica is confident enough in its rentable servers to anticipate better availability than cloud rivals: Amazon and Google both offer a 99.5-percent SLA for their equivalent infrastructure-as-a-service products.

However, this could more be an indication of the larger scale at which Google and Microsoft operate as — as Google has said — "at scale, everything breaks".

Telefonica promises to let businesses and developers increase the computing capacity of their rented servers by 400 percent at no extra cost.

Customers have a broad choice of operating systems for their servers, including Windows Server 2008, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, Debian and Joyent's Smart OS software, which wraps in DTrace and the ZFS filesystem for advanced monitoring and data integrity.

Initially, the servers are available from Telefonica datacentres in Madrid and London, but there are plans for global expansion.
