Telstra has secured an AU$2.3 million, three-year contract to manage the voice, mobile and data telecommunications requirements of independent regional airline Regional Express (Rex).

The telecommunications heavyweight said the new deal expanded its existing arrangements with the airline, which included some data connection and telephony services.

Regional Express chief executive, Geoff Breust, said in a statement "telecommunications services cut to the very heart of airline operations and we have to set very stringent requirements to make sure that our telco partner is able to put in place technical solutions that are efficient, reliable and robust".

Breust said that the decision to award the deal to Telstra's regional arm, Country Wide, was made after a four-month evaluation process.
