Telstra vans get a makeover

Now there's no doubt Full Duplex has covered some cutting issues in its short six month history. From SingTel spam to chook raffles, from ATUG bloopers to Sol Trujillo's favourite beer, this blog has surely had its finger on the pulse of the serious issues facing the Australian telecommunications industry.

In that vein I would now like to throw the floor open to a new debate:

Are the new Telstra vans hot or what??

BigPond has apparently given Telstra's ubiquitous services vans a slap-up paint job.

New Telstra's vans

"BigPond and Telstra Services ... are launching Telstra Services vans branded with striking images of the BigPond brand and its entertainment content," a press release that just landed on my desk said.

And just like every other Telstra network, they're going to be "rolled out" progressively throughout the nation.

"The vans will be rolled out in Sydney and Melbourne, with other locations to follow," the statement added.

Now I'd like to throw my hat in the ring and say I think the new vans are damn hot.

Frankly I've been bored with the old ones ... like most great Australian icons you blank them out after a while. The only time I really notice them is when one's parked out the front of my house fixing something (in which case I monitor my broadband connection carefully in case it suspiciously goes offline).

Personally, just like Pokemon cards, I'll be collecting sightings of the new vans. There are apparently seven flavours:

  • V8 Supercar
  • Music (a rock chick)
  • Sport (AFL)
  • Entertainment
  • Games (an online games geek, not too realistic)
  • Girl in White (What the? Apparently it represents the freedom of having fast broadband)
  • Girl in Yellow ("you're only limited by your imagination")

Now some of these sound like oddball marketing messages so I'll be keen to see how they come out.

Also, I'd like to throw out a challenge at this point to Optus and any other telco that has vans of any kind.

Can you guys match Telstra's efforts here? I'd like to see some jet black Optus vans with tinted windows and side fins zooming around my suburb.

BigPond's PR chieftain Craig Middleton just sent me some extra pics of the vans:

See what I mean? Funky eh? Better than the old boring ones.
