2011 promises to be a terrific year for mobile workers, with plenty of choices for working on the go. Here's a recap of the new enterprise mobile devices and technologies announced in January:

  • Motorola Xoom: This 10.1-inch tablet runs Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), the first version of Android designed specifically for tablets. The powerful dual-core processor promises to overcome the sluggish performance seen in earlier Android tablets.

  • Motorola Atrix: This Android 2.2 smartphone offers an interesting option for mobile workers--connect the phone to the laptop dock and it becomes a full-size nettop for working comfortably.
  • BlackBerry PlayBook: This 7-inch tablet runs on a new tablet OS; the demo unit I tested at CES felt snappy and very responsive, thanks to the new OS. We'll have to wait and see whether the apps for the PlayBook can match the quality and breadth of iPad and Android apps.
  • AMD Fusion Netbooks: If you prefer to work on a netbook with a proper keyboard, watch out for netbooks running on the AMD Fusion platform, like the HP Pavilion dm1z. They perform better than Atom-based nettops and yet have good battery life at affordable prices.
  • Intel Sandy Bridge Laptops: If you prefer a high performance laptop, watch out for laptops with the latest Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs. The new MacBook Pros will probably run on Sandy Bridge CPUs.

Expect to see many more exciting mobile devices this year: HP tablets running on the WebOS platform, new Samsung phones and tablets, and of course the new iPad 2.
