"The Morning Briefing" is SmartPlanet's daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we're reading about biofuel production.

.) Biofuel Tax Policy: Short term progress, long term challenges. Runaway oil dependence puts our environment, public health and national security at risk. That’s why the Senate Finance Committee’s recent extension of the cellulosic ethanol income tax credit is welcome news.

.) EPA to approve grain sorghum for cleaner ethanol. The federal government is on the verge of approving a grain mainly used as livestock feed to make a cleaner version of ethanol, a decision officials say could give farmers a new moneymaking opportunity, boost the biofuels industry and help the environment.

.) How a biofuel dream called Jatropha came crashing down. From Congress to The Colbert Report, people are talking about the Midwestern drought and debating whether it makes sense to convert the country's shrinking corn supplies into ethanol to power our cars.

.) Alternatives to food-based biofuels. [Letter]

.) The only biofuel stock you should own. Carbon is carbon. It may take the form of wood, sugar cane, algae, coal or dozens of other materials. But at the end of the day, the world still runs on processed carbon as a fuel source. That's why venture capitalists have poured hundreds of millions -- perhaps billions -- of dollars into biofuels.
