Toshiba Australia has confirmed it suffered a denial of service attack on its Web site. The manufacturer believes it was the innocent victim of a prank designed to impress other hackers.

AUSTRALIA (ZDNet Australia) - The site was defaced with a message written by a hacker and all links to other company sites were rendered useless, the company confirmed. The hacker is believed to go under the pseudomyn BL4F.

Toshiba was unavailable for comment but said in a statement that all Web services offered by the company were not affected by the attack.

YES

“The attack was not an attempt at intrusion and appears to have been directed more at other hacking groups than at Toshiba itself,” the statement read.

A DoS attack occurs when a hacker simulates thousands of simultaneous visitations to a single site, which freezes up the server powering the site.

The statement said the company had taken “further steps” to prevent further attacks on its site but did not provide details. The site was restored by midday.
