Toshiba has developed and announced Wipe, a new technology for self-encrypted hard disk drives and protecting sensitive information.
Wipe automatically erases the disk's contents either when removed from the system or when it is powered off. The technology does this by invalidating the HDD security key, thus scrambling all of the contents. This could be particularly useful in case the drive is stolen and removed from the computer to which it was attached.
Users can also choose to utilize this technology for wiping a disk clean upon return to the leasing system or when re-purposing the drive. For anyone interested in seriously protecting certain information, this sounds like a useful product, indeed.
Additionally, Wipe can be used on copier and printer set-ups. Thus, when unplugged and removed from the network, you can say goodbye to any saved information stored on these machines.
