Untangle deal gives Kaspersky fruits of OEM business model

The deal is yet another proof of an important open source business model -- the OEM model.

Untangle announced an OEM agreement with Kaspersky Lab, whose Kaspersky Anti-Virus won last summer’s Anti-Virus Fight Club.

The deal lets Untangle customers deploy the Virus Blocker Powered by Kaspersky with just 1 click.

The deal is yet another proof of an important open source business model -- the OEM model.

Most people are familiar with the support model, in which a program author seeks support dollars from heavy users. There's also the SaaS model, in which a hosted version charges users a monthly fee.

The OEM model is also powerful. You get someone else to re-sell a branded version of your open source product -- essentially selling in bulk.

A press statement from Untangle says this may be just part of a trend. "We're always looking for the best apps to offer our community," said CTO Dirk Morris.

Kaspersky is known in the development community for running Viruslist.com and its associated blog, a great resource for security professionals.
