[UPDATE: Seems this forecast was "inaccurate" ...]
Tech companies make all sorts of bold predictions, but this one from ReMIX regarding sales of Windows Phone 7 handsets is as bold as they get.
During yesterday’s ReMIX Microsoft showed an interesting slide that didn’t go unoticed by me. According to IDC predictions 30Million Windows Phone 7 devices will be sold by the end of 2011 with 1.6 million of them only in France.
Seriously, 30 million. Let's put this into perspective. So far Apple has sold some 50 million iPhones. And the iPhone is HOT hardware.
To pull off this sales feat, there's a little creativity in the numbers department going on. IDC is expecting (predicting ... guessing) that smartphone sales will increase to 40% of the cellphone market, up from 14% in 2010). That's a pretty big leap, and one that I really don't see happening this fast, at least not until smartphone prices drop to a more acceptable level, and data plans become cheaper and simpler for people to understand.
My prediction is that Microsoft will sell some 7 million handsets.
