Vietnam to get mobile number portability from 2017.

Despite mobile carriers agreeing in principle to apply the method, most of them were not willing to do it on schedule, said Le Thi Ngoc Mo, deputy head of the ministry's telecommunications department, in a report by Vietnam Net.

It noted if applied, all mobile numbers would be centrally managed by the telecommunications department instead each individual telco. This will also see it join the ranks of some 70 countries which already practise number portability .

The new policy is aimed at driving fairer competition , and allowing the study of e-commerce development in the mobile market.

Vietnam Net noted mobile subscriptions in the country have soared from 19 million in 2006 to 120 million in 2012.
