Vodafone and Intel are to co-develop an Atom-based kit for companies that want to embed machine-to-machine functionality in their products.

The companies announced the partnership on Tuesday, the second day of Mobile World Congress, saying in a statement that they intended the M2M Smart Services Developer Kit to "spur a new wave of innovation in the global M2M sector". The kit will combine a low-powered Atom processor with Vodafone's M2M mobile connectivity technology, and could be used to embed M2M capabilities in washing machines, cars and 'smart buildings', the companies said.

"The M2M market has the potential to boost customer service and profit margins, but take up has been partly held back by the complexity of installing and managing the technology," Vodafone M2M chief Erik Brenneis said in the statement. "This new collaboration will create a simple way for businesses to firstly connect devices to the Internet then manage the wireless connectivity of these devices across the world."

The first product to be co-created and jointly marketed by Intel and Vodafone will focus on generic M2M capabilities, but the companies will then tailor the kit for sectors including the automotive, smart home and connected white goods industries.

The companies did not give a timescale for the kits.
