Business and consumer superfast broadband packages unveiled

BT has revealed how much consumers will have to pay for fibre broadband with the announcement of two superfast broadband packages.

One package, priced at £19.99 per month, will attract a £50 connection charge and a 20GB data cap. The more expensive package will be priced at £24.99 per month but will come without a connection charge and so-called unlimited data, subject to fair usage policy.

Consumers will be able to sign up for the two packages from 25 January.

BT's consumer fibre service will offer a theoretical peak upload speed of up to 10Mbps and a downlink of up to 40Mbps.

A business fibre product, BT Business Total Broadband Fibre, will also be available in fibre-enabled areas from next week.

Once the telco's fibre rollout is completed in 2012, some 40 per cent of UK homes and businesses - around 10 million premises - are expected to be able to access its superfast broadband.

Trials of the service are already up and running in Whitchurch, Glasgow Halfway and London's Muswell Hill. For more from the London trial, see silicon.com's photo story BT previews superfast fibre broadband... in Muswell Hill.
