Only two per cent of the UK population use WAP technology, although 14 million say they are dependent upon their mobile phones.

According to a survey commissioned by online bank Egg and conducted by MORI, more than half of the population will only use new technologies if it will directly affect their lifestyle. Other findings from The Egg Report: Embracing Technology, show that although 18 million people own a PC, 61 per cent use it mainly for traditional activities such as word processing even though 15 million computer owners have domestic internet access. The report predicts that approximately 17 million people will start using new technologies over the next six months and 18 months from now over 23 million UK residents will be online. MORI conducted interviews with 2,029 adults, aged 16+, between 12 August and 5 September. Meanwhile, the internet bank has denied reports that is to set up a branch network. A spokeswoman said: "We never ruled out the possibility, but we may have a high street presence in some shape or form but currently we have no plans to set up a branch network to support our internet led operations".
