WAP portal locates pubs and curry houses

Wherever you are, whoever you are with, you'll always need a curry... Using WAP, you'll never go without. Will Knight reports

A WAP portal that lets users track down all manner of fun in their immediate vicinity has been launched by UK company GBdirect.

The service, Somewhere Near, will create an online community of WAP users who contribute information and even reviews about their favourite local haunts, or at least, that's the plan. This information can then be searched for by category and postcode using any WAP phone.

Somewhere Near has, a clear image of its potential users. It currently offers a searchable directory that can be used to locate, "pubs, hotels, curry houses."

Mike Banahan, lead developer at Somewhere Near, sees the service as an obvious application for WAP. "This is a useful tool, despite the obvious limitations of low bandwidth and small screens. I can think of plenty of occasions when I've been in an unfamiliar place with nothing but my phone and all I've wanted to know is where to find the nearest decent pub or restaurant."
