Mr Fowler, a photocopy repairman from Enfield, met mother of three Debbie Lynn Horton on an Internet chat site. Fowler says a "romance" developed which progressed to the telephone and nine months later the gooey couple were making wedding plans.
Fowler sold all his belongings and flew to Georgia only to discover six days later that he had been conned. Ms Horton took his $1,400 savings and left him stranded in a motel room.
Ms Horton, who is already married and still living with her husband, pleaded guilty to theft and agreed to pay back the money so that Mr Fowler could buy a ticket home.
