Westpac has said that a glitch occurred in a batch of payments overnight, which has delayed payments to and from Westpac accounts.
The bank had held over the affected batch to restore it, which had had a flow-on effect for the processing of other payments, such that customers who were expecting payment from or to Westpac accounts last night or this morning will experience delays.
The bank's IT teams have uncovered the reason for the problem with the batch's processing; however, the bank could not disclose this information when contacted. Its priority, it said, was restoring payments for customers.
The bank said that customers could continue to make payments throughout the day, but that there might be some delays, adding that ATM, POS, online banking, telephone banking and branch banking would continue to operate as normal.
Customers would not incur fees as a result of the delay, the bank said, and encouraged the customers of other banks to talk to their banks.
The bank apologised for the delay and said that it would continue its efforts to catch up on payments.
