Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 update has failed for around one in 10 users who have tried to install it, the company has said.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Microsoft spokeperson Michael Stroh wrote that 90 percent of the installations went fine, while of the remaining ten percent half were down to a poor internet connection or insufficient hard disk storage.

"Has the update process gone perfectly? No — but few large-scale software updates ever do, and the engineering team here was prepared," Stroh wrote, despite having written just two days before that the update was "relatively small".

The update does not actually bring any new functionality, being intended to make future updates easier to carry out. It emerged on Tuesday that it was 'bricking' some handsets, particularly Samsung Windows Phones.

In Wednesday's post, Stroh said the "technical issue" affected a "small number of Samsung phones", and updates to those handsets had been suspended. However, ZDNet UK's HTC HD7 has not been offered an update either, suggesting that the suspension extends beyond Samsung phones. Microsoft has not yet responded to a request for comment on this point.
