Wipro started off as a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company that produced oil and laundry soap, and later diversified into the IT business in 1980 and subsequently invented the first Indian 8086 chip.

Headquartered in Bangalore, the company now provides IT solutions and services, including systems integration, information systems outsourcing, software package implementation, software application development and maintenance, and research and development services to corporations globally.

Indian services companies like Wipro are looking at bigger deals and ramping up their capabilities worldwide. Wipro has more than 40 "Centers of Excellence" that create solutions around specific needs of industries.

In June 2006, Wipro acquired Portuguese IT company Enabler for US$52.5 million to further expand its geographic footprint and its portfolio in the retail sector.

Last quarter, the company added 54 new clients, of which 11 were Global 500/Fortune 1000 clients.
