Wireless charging for tablets is on the way

Tired of having to plug a cable into your tablet to charge it? That could soon be a thing of the past as wireless charging technology gets a power boost.

Freescale is planning to bring wireless charging to tablets and other power-hungry handheld devices next year.

The new 15-watt system will allow tablets to be wirelessly charged but also devices such as portable ePOS (electronic point-of-sales) terminals, power tools, and handheld medical devices.

According to Freescale the technology is compliant with the latest Wireless Power Consortium (WPC)-Qi and Medium Power Working Group (MPWG) requirements, which means that the new charging pad should be backward-compatible with existing devices.

According to Freescale, the system delivers three times the power of common 5-watt charging solutions, and offers efficient charging of larger form factor devices with higher capacity batteries, while enabling faster charging of smaller form factor devices by delivering higher power. For example, a typical tablet with a 4000 mAh battery might take over eight hours to charge from a standard USB port, while Freescale's solution could reduce this charge time dramatically to just a few hours.

"Today's mobile products offer a broader range of features, functionality and form factors than ever before, requiring developers of wireless charging systems to accommodate larger batteries and enable faster recharge speeds," said Denis Cabrol, director of global marketing and business development for Freescale's MCU group. "Freescale's industry-first 15 W solution is engineered to address these evolving market requirements, while helping to streamline product development and unleash design creativity."

Freescale also has plans to make wireless charging more ubiquitous, with charging mats built into airline seats, embedded in restaurant tables and vehicle consoles, and in hotel rooms.

The new charging solution is planned for availability to OEMs in Q1 2015.
