Philips Lighting on Wednesday announced a new water disinfection system that uses ultraviolet light to improve the quality of drinking water.

Named Philips InstantTrust, the system is different than conventional solutions because it can disinfect water independent of its temperature. (Thus, it can be used for hot or cold water systems.) That's good news for developing nations where water and energy infrastructure may be lacking.

The Dutch company says the compact system can be used on taps, water pitchers, filters and portable systems and produces sanitized water without delay, making it easy to generate safe drinking water off the grid.

Philips says the system is best for instant disinfection of small quantities of cold water; here's hoping that the technology develops to the point where they don't have to specify which application is optimal.
