SINGAPORE--Web giant Yahoo reigns as the most popular portal in terms of total number of unique visitors polled from among four Asian markets.

According to figures released by NetValue, Yahoo had a combined total of over 16.7 million unique visitors in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Korea in May this year. This was above the numbers for other top-ranking portals--such as Lycos, Microsoft, MSN, Naver and Daum-- in these countries (see Table 1 below).

According to the global Internet measurement company, Yahoo has also been the top ranking property in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan every month since January 2001, with the exception of Korea--where the portal has been at second place, behind Web property Daum.

However, among its Asian markets, Yahoo also saw its highest level of unique visitors in Korea--with over 10.3 million in May (see Table 2). This was followed by Taiwan (around 4.7 million), Hong Kong (about 1.06 million) and Singapore (607,000).

In terms of reach and duration, Taiwan was the leader, with visitors surfing an average of nearly two hours for May. Taiwanese users also saw more unique pages (127.3) and displays (266.9), both of which were high figures compared with the other markets (including the US).

Globally, consumer usage throughout Yahoo continued to grow. An earlier report said the company's total number of unique users grew to 200 million during June 2001, compared with 156 million last year. The company also reached 1.2 billion page views per day, while 71 million active registered users logged in to Yahoo in June.

Meanwhile, Yahoo on Wednesday reported second-quarter earnings that exceeded Wall Street's expectations. The company reported pro forma net income of US$8.7 million, compared with US$69.1 million, or US$0.11 per share, in the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter totaled US$182.2 million, compared with US$272.9 million a year ago.
