Aperture 3, a year too late?

Apple yesterday released Aperture 3 ($199, $99 upgrade) a major update to its flagship photo management software. The problem is that most of the new features (Faces, Places) were added to iPhoto '09 over a year ago.

While it's true that Apple has beefed up the facial recognition and geotagging features found in Aperture 3, the update is far too late and I fear that Apple lost a lot of Aperture users to iPhoto '09 when it came out last year.

According to CNet News the Faces feature in Aperture 3 can be applied to individual projects within Aperture. This allows people to search for faces within a small segment of their photo library, instead of the entire library (like iPhoto). Aperture 3 also adds nondestructive, edge-aware brushes, full screen browser and some other niceties.

Even though I own a license for Aperture 2, I probably won't be paying the $100 to upgrade to Aperture 3. I'll most likely stick with iPhoto '09 since it's been working nicely for over a year.

When I posted a poll a year ago about photo management software the results skewed heavy for Aperture (67%), iPhoto got 20% and something else got 13%, with over 1500 votes.

What are you using in 2010? iPhoto? Aperture? Something else?
