DotCloud expands PaaS offerings for apps worldwide
DotCloud, a start-up dedicated to Platform as a Service, is moving on from private beta mode to offering its services to developers and IT departments for deploying their applications worldwide.
The two new additions to the service being introduced this week amidst GigaOm's Structure conference touch upon two of the major themes discussed at the show: scalability and availability. Most speakers at Structure seemed to agree that without a focus on these two functions at the start, cloud adoption will be incredibly difficult.
Thus, DotCloud is implementing a feature called Dynamic Scaling, which automatically allocates increasing traffic to amongst the available resources to manage the load. The second feature is dubbed as High Availability, which also automatically supports apps to span across multiple data centers and availability zones seamlessly to the end user.
The San Francisco-based PaaS company has worked to set itself apart as it offers a multi-stack system - meaning that developers can use DotCloud for experimenting and building applications and platforms in multiple coding languages. That includes support for at least 12 stacks and databases at the moment, including the most major scripts such as Java, Perl and PHP, among others.
Currently serving developers ranging from hobbyists to freelancers to the enterprise level, DotCloud execs plan to target larger enterprises and tackle additional stacks in in the near future.
