Samsung continues lead over LCD TV shipments in U.S.

Getting a boost from the holiday season, Samsung increased its lead in the U.S. LCD TV market share.

As Samsung continues to lead mobile OEM market in the United States, the Seoul-based enterprise is doing a pretty good job with stateside LCD TV shipments as well.

Samsung "solidified" its place at the top of the leader board of LCD TV shipments in the U.S. as of the fourth quarter of 2011, according to a report from IHS iSuppli.

Possibly getting a big boost from Black Friday, Cyber Monday and all the rest of the holiday shopping season, Samsung also saw an increase from roughly 18.9 percent of the market share in Q3 2011 to approximately 23.6 percent in Q4 2011. Vizio, LG, Sony and Toshiba rounded out the top five, respectively.

iSuppli analysts also pointed towards another interesting contributing factor:

In an example of how Samsung was able to capitalize on its broad range of products, the company in the fourth quarter sold two LCD TV models that were identical in every way, except that one integrated the older cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting—while the other employed the newer and more expensive light-emitting diode (LED) technology. This gave consumers a clear choice of features and price points.

As for the U.S. LCD market overall, it did quite well last quarter, rising by 30.7 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Demand for LCD TVs, in particular, is expected to grow over the course of the coming year.

In January, NPD DisplaySearch published a report that asserted demand for the total TV market will rise by 2 percent in 2012, with particular growth in shipments of large LCD TV screens (40 inches and larger).

Nevertheless, NPD published another report in March that found TV shipments overall dropped in 2011 after six years of growth. Yet the slip up wasn't big — just 0.3 percent decrease to 247.7 million units — held up mainly by LCD TVs.
