Samsung Galaxy S II US names, carriers revealed; original Galaxy S gets Gingerbread
We've been waiting a long time for the Samsung Galaxy S II series to hit shelves, and now that day seems even closer.
According to some leaked images with product descriptions unearthed by PocketNow, we can soon expect to see the following:
- AT&T: Galaxy S II Attain
- Verizon: Galaxy S II Function
- Sprint: Galaxy S II Within
Strangely, T-Mobile has been left off the list (perhaps Samsung is just getting ready for the AT&T merger now?), as has US Cellular, which also had its own version of the original Galaxy S smartphone.
Additionally, those names are a far more serious (or even lackluster) than the monikers of the first generation: Captivate, Fascinate, Vibrant, Epic 4G and Mesmerize. Perhaps Samsung is focusing more on business and productivity with this next round of handsets?
Note that this information hasn't been confirmed or denied by Samsung, but we could know more after a scheduled press conference on Tuesday, May 24.
In official Samsung news, the original Galaxy S smartphone set, along with the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Ace/Gio/Fit/mini mobile phones, are due for a boost from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3. As it stands now, the firmware upgrade will drop in the United Kingdom and Nordic countries first this month, with a gradual roll out to the rest of the world (including North America).
Considering that certain Galaxy S smartphones in the U.S. have had to wait a long time just to get Froyo, one can imagine how long it will take to get Gingerbread up and running on those mobile devices over here.
