VMware has announced plans to acquire Digital Fuel, a company dedicated to IT financial management and optimization for SaaS solutions.

VMware already has the virtualization and cloud computing infrastructures fairly covered, but this purchase of Digital Fuel signifies the Silicon Valley-based company's intention to hone in on IT services.

Digital Fuel already has a portfolio of solutions lined up for IT management of costs, budgeting and billing. It also offers usage and service level analysis to enterprise customers. Thus, VMware can offer a more complete (or at least larger) package to clients interested in managing both cloud-based and SaaS platforms.

VMware's VP and general manager Boaz Chalamish said in a statement:

New levels of financial visibility and control in cloud environments will enable CIOs to engage with the CFO, line of business stakeholders and others around how IT investments translate to real business value. As an authority on helping organizations navigate the business operations of IT, Digital Fuel will add a significant capability to our portfolio, broadening beyond operational management to include business-centric capabilities.

Both VMware and Digital Fuel also tout that this merger will also give business customers more cost-efficient options.

Although the deal is expected to close in July, the terms of the merger have not been revealed yet.
