The Motorola Droid put Android on the map for Verizon and has been so successful that the majority of people who I show my Google Android devices to (no matter what kind of device it is) ask if it is a Droid. Verizon has built on that brand with several devices with the Droid branding and today we see the announcement of the Droid 2 that closely follows their excellent Droid X device, also from Motorola. The Droid 2 will be available for ordering starting tomorrow at VerizonWireless.com for $199.99 after $100 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract. It will be available in stores on 12 August.

Specifications of the Droid 2 include the following:

  • Slide-out QWERTY keyboard
  • Google Android 2.2
  • 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM
  • 8 GB of installed Flash memory
  • 3.7 inch display
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • microSD card slot

Software included Adobe Flash Player 10.1 integration, 3G mobile hotspot capability (same $20 for 2GB that you can find on the Droid X), NFL Mobile, Skype Mobile, Blockbuster on Demand, Swype input keyboard, DLNA streaming and more. You can check out the full Droid 2 Fact Sheet for more details.

There will also be a limited edition R2-D2 version of the Droid 2 available in September for all of us Star Wars fans out there. This version will have exclusive Star Wars content with external hardware designed to look like R2-D2.
