Panasonic is stepping it up when it comes to ultra-compact digital cameras with the release of the Lumix DMC-FX700.

For anyone searching for a point-and-shoot device that also records quality video, this is definitely one to consider. The 14.1-megapixel Lumix camera supports recording full HD 1,920 x 1,080 resolution video in AVCHD. Still shooting speed is decent with a Venus Engine FHD processor and f2.2-5.9 aperture range.

There are also a lot of preset functions, but Panasonic highlights its signature Intelligent Auto, which has been upgraded to include Motion Deblur and Intelligent Burst modes. Motion Deblur automatically raises the shutter speed to reduce blurring, either due to high-speed subjects or handshake. Intelligent Burst comes into play when (what else) burst shooting, and it calculates the frame rate based on the subject's motion and speed.

Here's what else to look out for on the Panasonic FX700:

  • 3.0-inch TFT LCD touchscreen
  • 24mm ultra-wide angle Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens
  • 5x optical zoom
  • 4x digital zoom
  • ISO up to 6,400
  • Uses SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0, mini-HDMI, DC-in, AV-out

Available in four shades (black, gray, champagne gold and silver), expect the Lumix DMC-FX700 to launch in August for $399.
