Panasonic and Olympus might have been the early trailblazers when it came to micro four thirds digital cameras. But Sony has scored a major coup with the launch of the NEX-VG10, the world's first interchangeable lens HD camcorder.

Falling within Sony's trademark Handycam series, the NEX-VG10 hosts a Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, and it is powered by a BIONZ processor. The E-mount 18-200mm lens is included in the bundle, but NEX-VG10 is compatible with both E-mount and A-mount interchangable lenses.

As for the recording experience, the NEX-VG10 shoots full 1080p HD video at up to 24Mbps and can snap still photos at 14.2 megapixels. And while Sony boasts about the silent operation, videographers should be able to capture just about any sound with the exceptionally long-named Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone.

Other specs of interest here are the 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD swivel screen, 11x optical zoom, and compatibility with Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD cards. You'll need those since there's no known internal storage space.

Like the Canon VIXIA HF M32, the NEX-VG10 will also hit shelves in September - except for double the price at $2,000. Innovation is never cheap. But it is available for pre-order starting today.
