As part of its usual plans to publish lists for what was popular in the past year, Facebook has now moved on to games. This list follows the the most shared articles in 2011, the top political articles for 2011, and a new section on the company's own Facebook Page called Memology 2011 (see top 10 global topics for 2011).

In 2011, Facebook users loved playing hidden object, simulation, and casino-related games with their friends, according to Menlo Park. The average game player on Facebook played more than three different gaming titles each month and played more than half the days they visited the site.

The biggest game titles are being built by developers around the world from Seattle, Santa Monica, Canada, Germany, Japan, Serbia, and Prague. The following list was compiled by looking at the top games on Facebook with more than 100,000 monthly active users and giving priority to those games with the highest user satisfaction scores. So, without further ado, here are Facebook's 10 most popular games in 2011:

  1. Gardens of Time (By Playdom)
  2. The Sims Social (By EA)
  3. Cityville (By Zynga)
  4. DoubleDown Casino (by DoubleDown Interactive)
  5. Indiana Jones Adventure World (By Zynga)
  6. Words With Friends (By Zynga)
  7. Bingo Blitz (By Buffalo Studios)
  8. Empires & Allies (By Zynga)
  9. Slotomania-Slot Machines (By Playtika)
  10. Diamond Dash (By wooga)

As you can see, the most popular game was not created by Zynga, the social game developer that tightly partnered with Facebook and quickly built a massive following of gamers. I've never heard of Gardens of Time, so I put the trailer up at the top of this post in case you haven't either.

I personally don't play any games on Facebook, but I do know some of my friends on the social network are pretty addicted. Do you play Facebook games, and if so, how many of the above 10 have you tried?
