CES 2012: Samsung's 55-inch Super OLED HDTV will debut in second half of 2012

In the wake of LG's announcement that it was releasing a 55-inch OLED set this year, Samsung has matched it with an OLED set of its own. In the wake of LG's announcement that it was releasing a 55-inch OLED set this year, Samsung has matched it with an OLED set of its own. The 55-inch Super OLED HDTV (being shown off above at Samsung's press conference yesterday) is expected to debut in the second half of the year, though as with the LG, there is no pricing info yet. (Here's a guess: really expensive.)

According to our sister site CNET, the Super OLED is 0.3-inches deep, which isn't as thin as LG's, but still plenty svelte. Samsung did not disclose its weight, but claims it "weighs significantly less than a standard LED TV." It will come with all the accoutrements of Samsung's 2012 HDTVs, including Smart Interaction technology that combines voice and facial recognition and motion controls to allow viewers to control the set through voice controls. And, yes, it does 3D.

Will the small amount of competition between LG and Samsung be enough to kick-start an OLED revolution? Maybe not at prices above $5,000, but if enough early adopters are convinced to purchase, perhaps the technology will have a future in televisions after all.
