Students can now sign up to Amazon Prime for free, allowing unlimited free two-day shipping on textbooks and other items purchased through the site.

This is part of Amazon Student, a program created for university students, which also comes with email alerts for discounts and promotions.

The unlimited free two-day shipping will be a major plus for students buying their new textbooks through the site - often at a discounted rate - and can have them guaranteed to arrive by the end of fresher's week after the reading lists have been sent out.

There is no minimum order size, meaning you can buy your books as and when you want to without having to reach a minimum order, weight or price.

Valued at $79, the service will be given for free in exchange for your .edu email account. Any US student or academic member of staff with a .edu email address will be able to sign up for the service. There is no word on when or whether this will be available to other countries.

Well done, Amazon; 10 points to Gryffindor.

Thanks to Rich DeMuro for the heads up.
