Thanks for all the good times Russell, we'll miss you

I was shocked and saddened when I read on Dan Farber's blog that Russell Shaw passed away on Friday, 14 March. I met Russell at Gnomedex last year after communicating with him virtually over the year previous to that. He was a fellow ZDNet blogger and wrote the IP Telephony and BlackBerry blogs. I enjoyed both of his blogs and read them whenever he posted something. I do not know the details of his passing or if he had a family. He lived close to me in Portland, Oregon and I am sorry I didn't get to know him a bit better. He was a very kind person and helpful to me as well. I pray that his friends and family are comforted during this time of grief and am sorry to see another ZDNet blogger pass away at such a young age.

Apple restricts 3rd party developers with lack of multi-tasking on the iPhone

Apple restricts 3rd party developers with lack of multi-tasking on the iPhone

I was on a research vessel working offline last week when the iPhone SDK details were revealed by Steve Jobs and others at Apple, but that evening when I read all the news I was extremely happy to see Exchange ActiveSync support because my hosted Exchange service with 4Smartphone is what allows me to bounce between about 6 mobile phones and 2 or 3 notebooks in a given week without worrying about what PIM data is created and used on any of them. However, after reading more about the iPhone SDK and calming down a bit after seeing the amazing game possibilities and other 3rd party applications the news of lack of multi-tasking took me back to 1999 and thoughts of the Palm OS.

Truphone launches new low-cost international VoIP pricing with Tru Zone

Truphone launches new low-cost international VoIP pricing with Tru Zone

I use a few different VoIP clients on my Nokia N95, which is one of the main reasons I thoroughly enjoy using devices running the S60 OS, and the client I keep going back to for reliable communications is Truphone. As a user who started using their service last year, I recently received an email stating that I get to keep calling for free until 1 June of this year since I amm a founding customer. Truphone made an announcement today revealing their new "Tru Zone" pricing structure that makes most calls to landlines 6 cents per minute and calls to mobile phones 30 cents per minute. Truphone-to-Truphone calls still remain free and always will. With rates this low, you won't have to worry about making calls when traveling or placing calls overseas. You do need a WiFi connection and a compatible mobile phone to use Truphone, but it does work on a large number of Nokia devices.

Review: Spb Mobile Shell 2.0 increases the efficiency of your Windows Mobile device

Review: Spb Mobile Shell 2.0 increases the efficiency of your Windows Mobile device

The HTC Advantage (check out my review) is one of my all-time favorite Windows Mobile devices and I am using it more and more as an ultra portable PC. There are lots of different Today screen plug-ins available, but I find a lot of them slow down the device or are not easily accessible with a quick finger press. Spb Software House develops some of the best applications for Windows Mobile devices and I tried using Spb Mobile Shell 1.5 last year on the Advantage, but when I loaded the RealVGA utility to take advantage of this beautiful high resolution display I ran into some compatibility issues and removed it from the Advantage. I was very pleased to see that Spb Mobile Shell 2.0 was just released yesterday and am happy to report it works well with RealVGA running on the HTC Advantage. I have been playing with this application for several days and you can check out just about every screen in the application in my image gallery as well as view the application in action in my video below.

Asus EeePC successor with 8.9 inch display to be announced at CeBIT

Asus EeePC successor with 8.9 inch display to be announced at CeBIT

I just recently bought a Fujitsu U810 UMPC to serve as my mobile computing device, but have been seriously looking at the Asus EeePC as another alternative for my daily 2+ hour commuting needs. Engadget has pics of the Asus EeePC 900 that is supposed to be officially announced tomorrow at the CeBIT show in Germany. DailyTech also has a few more details, including a photo of the new model. The Asus EeePC 900 looks very similar to the current EeePC, but has an 8.9 inch display (current model has a 7 inch display) and up to 12GB of internal flash memory. Apparently, this new model may launch at a cost of EUR399 this summer. I'll keep my eye out for the press release that should have more details on the specifications.
