First impressions of the AT&T Tilt

First impressions of the AT&T Tilt

The HTC Kaiser/TyTN II might be one of the most anticipated Windows Mobile devices in the last couple of years with early reviews coming out in August and rumors of an U.S. AT&T release. AT&T and HTC just announced the availability of the AT&T Tilt (aka HTC TyTN II/Kaiser) on their U.S. 3.5G wireless data network and I have been lucky enough to have had 5 days with the device. The following are my thoughts after using the device for a few days and I'm sure you will see some more in-depth reviews as some reviewers have had the device for a couple of weeks now. My AT&T account was actually set to get cancelled earlier today, but after receiving an evaluation unit of the Tilt and using it for a couple of days I called up and made sure my AT&T service would continue. The Tilt is so good that I may actually decide to stay with AT&T so I can pick one up for myself.

MobileTechRoundup show #112, iPhone update, Palm Centro, N95-3

MobileTechRoundup show #112, iPhone update, Palm Centro, N95-3

Kevin and I discussed the newest iPhone firmware update to kick off MobileTechRoundup show #112 and James still has no interest in getting the iPhone, although the iPod Touch may soon be in his collection. I may be upgrading my Slingbox Classic to a SOLO soon and am loving the N95 SlingPlayer Mobile client. The US N95-3 is available now for US$699 and this may be the next device on my list to obtain. The Palm Centro is coming soon to Sprint at only US$99, but James doesn't think it will have much of an impact on the smartphone market. Kevin and I chime in with our thoughts too. Is the Apple mobile device just wishful thinking or will we see something in 2008? Office Mobile 6.1 as a stand-alone application was linked online, but then pulled. It will be coming soon though so stay tuned if you want this Office software for your mobile device.

Does iPhone update 1.1.1 kill off 3rd party application development?

Does iPhone update 1.1.1 kill off 3rd party application development?

We were all warned by Apple and those of us who SIM unlocked our iPhones knew there was the risk that they could never be updated. Apparently, lots of people must have thought Apple's notice was just a false warning since they tried to update their iPhones anyways and turned them into iBricks. I knew better than to take another risk since I am very happy with my iPhone in its current state running on the T-Mobile USA network and made the decision to never update it unless there was a reliable hack I could trust not to brick it. Other than all the news surrounding the SIM unlock hack and iBricks, I think the bigger story of this latest iPhone 1.1.1 update may be the complete loss of 3rd party application support.

Sling Media announces SlingPlayer for S60 devices

Sling Media announces SlingPlayer for S60 devices

I started using a Slingbox (now called the Slingbox Classic) a couple of years ago after Sling Media was kind enough to give each Mobius attendee a box to evaluate. I have to admit that the Slingbox actually resulted in me upgrading my TV setup to an HDTV with a DVR. I travel quite a bit for work and find the Slingbox and SlingPlayer Mobile clients valuable for keeping me updated with the latest shows that I follow. SlingPlayer kicked off their mobile clients with Windows Mobile Pocket PC and has since developed mobile clients for WM Smartphones and Palm OS devices. There has been a Symbian client on the 3 network, but it was locked to certain devices with the carrier. I am happy to say that Sling Media announced the general release of SlingPlayer for S60 devices.

The mobile web is much better than it was 10 years ago

The mobile web is much better than it was 10 years ago

For those of us who have been using mobile devices for 10 years or more we can recall the days when we had cables connected from our PDAs to our basic cell phones that connected us to the web through our ISP dial-up numbers. I used to surf with a Palm IIIx connected to a Qwest Kyocera phone at a blazing 14.4 kbps. IMHO, the mobile web has come a LONG way in 10 years and I have to agree with Russell Beattie in regards to a post that made TechMeme regarding the mobile web. I am actually quite satisfied with the 140 kbps EDGE speeds I see on T-Mobile and those on 3G get much better speeds than this. You used to have to search for mobile formatted sites, but now anyone who has any sense has a mobile formatted web page.
