Nokia N95 with 3G support for the U.S. coming in September

Nokia N95 with 3G support for the U.S. coming in September

I was reading the jkOnTheRun blog this morning and stumbled across their post that a Nokia N95 with U.S. 3G support was coming in September. I then followed the link to the original story by Om Malik where he happened to stumble upon one of these early N95 units while meeting with the Sling Media folks. The Nokia N95 has been a huge worldwide seller and I personally keep going back to this amazing device. The inclusion of U.S. HSDPA (only with AT&T) is a major step in making this a more compelling purchase here in the U.S. I was also excited to hear that the Sling Media representative Om was talking with was using SlingPlayer Mobile on the device as I have been waiting for a S60 client for months.

smart2go gets you where you need to go on the HTC Advantage

smart2go gets you where you need to go on the HTC Advantage

I was pretty impressed with the GPS receiver on the HTC Advantage, but the Google Maps application isn't that functional for routing and navigation compared to other dedicated 3rd party applications. As I stated back in February, Nokia made their new smart2go mapping solution available to owners of S60 and Windows Mobile Pocket PC devices. I just loaded it up on the HTC Advantage to try it out and while the fonts are not sharp on the VGA display, the program provides many more options than seen on Google Maps. Again, I was able to get a fix in my basement rec room within a minute or so and see lots of points-of-interest near my house. What is your favorite mapping application that you recommend I try on a Windows Mobile device?

HTC Advantage first impressions: GPS and HSDPA rock!

HTC Advantage first impressions: GPS and HSDPA rock!

HTC is the premier Windows Mobile manufacturer and as I blogged about yesterday they just started selling the HTC Advantage X7501 at U.S. retail locations. I was sent a review unit to evaluate for a while and spent several hours last night playing with the device to see a bit of what it was all about. The HTC Advantage is the most powerful Windows Mobile Professional (aka Pocket PC Phone Edition) device on the market and has features that actually rival that of UMPC devices. Some features are actually even better than UMPCs, like the integrated 3G wireless radio and integrated GPS receiver. In the few hours that I played with it so far, I found a couple disappointments and a couple of features and functions that have me thinking I may need to save up some money for one of these devices. I took a few unboxing and product photos that you can check out in the image gallery.

HTC Advantage X7501 now available at U.S. retail stores

HTC Advantage X7501 now available at U.S. retail stores

My friend Judy picked up an HTC Advantage from Europe a couple months ago and was quite excited about her US$1,000+ purchase at the time. I was reading the blog of the HTC PR rep I have been working with and discovered that the U.S. retail availability of the HTC Advantage 7501 was announced today. A quick couple searches found the HTC Advantage at CompUSA for US$899.99 and Amazon.com for US$849.99. That is actually not too bad considering I paid US$850 for my MDA III Pocket PC Phone Edition a couple years ago that had much lower specs than this mobile device. Luckily, a review unit is arriving at my house today so I'll be able to take it for a spin and write up a review here on the Mobile Gadgeteer blog in the next couple of weeks. I think this could serve as a UMPC replacement in the areas of mobile multimedia player, GPS unit, and even a document editing machine.

Is this the Treo 800p?

Is this the Treo 800p?

There have been rumors of new Palm devices leaking out for a few months and PalmInfocenter looks to have obtained the first spy shots of the Palm Gandalf (aka Treo 800p) taken with a low quality cameraphone. This device looks to offer a significantly altered Treo design with lots of curves and rather small looking keyboard. Rumors have different models running both Windows Mobile and the Palm OS. IMHO, the device doesn't look that enticing to me and reminds me of the simple Palm Zire device. It is going to be tough for manufacturers to compete in the mobile market with tiny keyboards and small square displays after people have had a chance to play with an Apple iPhone. I look forward to products coming out in 2008 when other manufacturers should have had time to design some compelling alternatives rather than updates to existing models.

iPhone update also adds IMAP email and Passcode improvements

iPhone update also adds IMAP email and Passcode improvements

As Jason blogged, Apple released an update for the Apple iPhone last night that was geared towards security updates for Safari. However, there were also a couple other minor improvements that actually may be quite important for iPhone owners. Prior to the update I only saw Inbox, Trash, Drafts (if I had any started), and Sent in my 4smartphone hosted Exchange IMAP mailbox. I now have visible access to ALL of my IMAP folders, as it should have been with true IMAP, in addition to folders called RSS Feeds (with subfolders labeled Microsoft at Home and at Work), Sync Issues (with subfolders for Conflicts, Local Failures, and Server Failures). These additional folders may be specific to my IMAP account and I'll have to check them out some more. The mail program still doesn't manage email like it should with IMAP (as seen with Yahoo! Mail), but getting access to my folders is a step closer.
