Want to customize your company's caller ID? Here's one way.

IP telephone services company YouMail helps small businesses update the information displayed when they call or leave a message.

Cloud-hosted IP telephony services company YouMail has come up with a feature that it hopes will help differentiate its service: the ability to let small businesses control how their caller ID is displayed.

YouMail offers applications including YouMail Visual Voicemail Plus and WhoAreYou, which identify incoming callers with information such as the caller's location and a representative photo. Its newest feature allows subscribers to fill out a form via Facebook customizing the caller ID for their number and submit it. That information will be displayed whenever users call someone within the YouMail network, which now includes approximately 2 million registered people. The information is displayed regardless of whether or not someone is listed in your phone or smartphone's address book.

YouMail's free Visual Voicemail Plus application runs on smartphone operating systems including BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, WebOS, Windows Phone 7 and Windows 6.5.

In the press release describing the new service, YouMail CEO Alex Quilici said:

"YouMail is focused on reinventing the enhanced telecommunications layer, where services like voicemail and now caller ID are moved out of the network and into the cloud, made social, optimized for smartphones and sold direct to consumers using a freemium model. Letting users control their own caller ID is a natural outgrowth of this process."

You can find out what your current caller ID says about you by visiting this site. You can edit that information, but the trade off is that you will need to register with YouMail to do so.
