'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

The best iPhone deals right now (including the new iPhone 15)

Retailers and carriers are offering promotions on all models of the iPhone. These are the best deals available online for models including the new iPhone 15.
By Charlie Osborne, Contributing Writer and  Allison Murray, Staff Writer

Shopping for a new iPhone can be a lengthy and sometimes stressful process -- especially when a new model is announced. There's a lot to consider between deciding which model to get and looking for ways to save money on your purchase.

Thankfully, carriers and even Apple constantly rotate promotions on all Apple's current iPhone models. That means you're not locked into getting whatever the newest (and most expensive) iPhone is, but if the latest iPhone 15 is what you're after, we've brought together the best preorder deals available.

You can also find deals on models including the iPhone SEiPhone 11iPhone 12, and the iPhone 13. And, of course, you can secure deals on iPhone 14 models, including the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max

You'll notice that many carrier deals have the potential to net you a free iPhone, assuming you have the right type of phone to trade in and sign up for a plan included in the promotion. Naturally, the devil's in the details, or rather fine print, for any smartphone deal. But that's why we're here.

Our favorite deal is a preorder promotion at T-Mobile for the new iPhone 15 lineup. You can opt for a free iPhone 15 Pro, or up to $1000 off another iPhone model, applied in bill credits. In addition, if you're hoping to pick up more than one iPhone 15, you can receive a $700 discount on a second device with the right plan.

Below, you'll find the best deals currently available through US carriers and major retailers, including new flagship devices, mid-range options, and refurbished products. (You can also check out the best early Black Friday phone deals, and the best early Black Friday Apple deals.)

The best iPhone deals in September 2023

T-Mobile has announced preorder deals for the new iPhone 15 range.

The carrier will give customers a free iPhone 15 Pro or up to $1000 off other iPhone 15 models -- applied in bill credits -- when they trade in an eligible device on Go5G Plus or Go5G Next plans.

In addition, you can take advantage of a discount of up to $650 off any iPhone 15 model on other plans.

If you're in the market for more than one iPhone 15, T-Mobile will give you a $700 discount on a second device when you add a line on the majority of T-Mobile plans. In addition, if you also want a new Apple Watch, you will receive a $300 discount off a second device with a new Watch line.

Preorders begin on Friday, September 15.

From this Friday, you can order a device from the new iPhone 15 range directly from Apple.

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are lighter and thinner than their legacy counterparts and come equipped with a USB-C port -- courtesy of the EU -- 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays and the Dynamic Island camera design. These devices are available in pink, yellow, green, blue, and black.

Retailing for $799 and $899, you will receive up to $650 in credit when you trade in an older device, alongside Apple Card cashback.

In addition, Apple will also allow you to preorder the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max directly from its website.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max come with Apple's new A17 Pro CPU, a faster neural engine, USB-C port, and camera improvements, including a 5X telephoto lens on the Pro Max. Available in black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium finishes, the iPhone 15 Pro retails for $999, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max is $1,199.

Apple is offering up to $650 in trade-in credits and Apple Card cashback.

Preorders begin on September 15 at 5 a.m. PT.

AT&T offers the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro free with trade-in (up to $1000 off) to new and existing customers.

The offer will go live in a few days, and as long as you are willing to trade in an eligible device, you can walk away with either a free handset or a sizable discount on the total retail price.

In addition, AT&T will launch a promotion for the Apple Watch product line: buy one, receive $300 off another.

Preorders will begin on September 15, 5 a.m. PT.

If you're a Verizon customer, you'll be interested in the deals the US telecoms giant offers.

Verizon will give you up to $1,000 off any iPhone 15 model (in bill credits) with any iPhone trade-in, in any condition. Furthermore, the company will give you up to $830 off on eligible Unlimited plans with the trade-in of other suitable devices.

New and existing customers can sign up for a new line on the Unlimited Ultimate plan to receive an iPhone 15 Pro for free.

The new Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 are also available for steep monthly discounts when you purchase an eligible iPhone and trade in an older Watch model.

Preorders begin on September 15.

At AT&T, you can get an iPhone 14 Pro Max for up to $1,000 off when you have an eligible trade-in device. Instead of paying $30.56 monthly for your new iPhone, you could pay as little as $2.78 per month with this deal. The iPhone is available in purple, gold, silver, or black.

Verizon customers can save up to $1000 on the iPhone 14 Pro Max when they sign up for a new line. You can also take advantage of a $280 discount on an iPad when you purchase a 5G Apple iPhone. Alternatively, Verizon grants customers a free NFL Sunday ticket (up to $449) when buying a phone on an eligible plan.

Regarding trade-ins, you can save up to $800 if your old device is free from battery damage.

If you are willing to trade in a suitable device, you can pick up your new handset for free at AT&T.

The iPhone 14 Pro, a step up from the iPhone 14, comes with up to 1024 GB storage and comes in five colors. If you don't take up the trade-in offer, the 128GB version of the handset will be priced at $27.78 monthly.

If you'd prefer to pick up an Apple iPhone 14 Pro at T-Mobile, you can save up to $830, applied in bill credits over 24 months, with a suitable trade-in device and an agreement to set up a new line. The same deal applies when you trade on a Go5G Next or Go5G Plus! Plan.

Over at T-Mobile, both new and existing customers can pick up an iPhone 14 with an $830 discount (via 24 months of bill credits) when they trade in an eligible device on the carrier's Go5G Plus! Plan. To get this deal, you'll have to trade a suitable device, and depending on the model and condition, your discount will vary.

How did we choose these iPhone deals?

While researching the best Apple iPhone deals, we scoured the web and checked out promotional prices offered by major US retailers and telecoms firms including Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

We wanted to ensure we found the best deals on iPhones, including the new flagship models and older variants. We've shown you the best discounts and trade-in offers available -- but remember that stocks can be limited and sales pulled at any time.

Factors influencing our recommendations include:

  • Price: The main factor we consider is the price. If the discount isn't noteworthy, relative to the original price point -- or no trade-in offers are available -- then we don't consider it worthy of inclusion.
  • Variety: Here at ZDNET, we want to provide you with a variety of iPhone options with bonuses. We've selected deals that bring down the price of your new handset, alongside bonus incentives such as free services or discounts on other devices in the Apple ecosystem.
  • Availability: If we come across a great Apple deal but only a few units are in stock unless it is a stellar saving you only see once in a blue moon, we will discount it and select a product with better stock levels instead.

What is the best iPhone?

The best iPhone currently on the market is the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The 6.7-inch model is the largest of the iPhone 15 line and comes stacked with Apple's latest features, such as a strong lightweight titanium design, Dynamic Island, an A17 Pro chip, and a 48MP Main camera that shoots detailed imagery.
