'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

The best Verizon deals right now

Verizon has great deals on the latest Apple products. Here are the best deals available this month.
By Charlie Osborne, Contributing Writer

If you're a Verizon (or potential) customer looking for a discount on a new phone from Apple or Samsung, you're in luck.

The internet service provider is currently offering several sales on the iPhone 14 Plus and 14 Pro Max, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 (in part to compete with rivals like AT&T and T-Mobile), all to lure consumers to sign up for new contracts or switch phone carriers.

This month, ZDNET found some excellent deals at Verizon, including free handsets, attractive trade-in offers, and discounts on top-of-the-range devices. This includes the new iPhone 15 range.

As you can imagine, the best deals at Verizon right now are for Apple's iPhone 15 lineup. Verizon offers a range of promotions for the flagship range, available to order from Friday, September 15. These include up to $1,000 off a new model, applied in bill credits when you trade in a suitable device.

Check out our top picks below. We've also rounded up the best Verizon deals ahead of Black Friday, which you can check for the latest deals.

The best deals at Verizon

As Apple announced its latest iPhone 15 range on Tuesday 13 -- the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max -- many of us will eagerly await preorders opening on Friday, September 15.

While Verizon hasn't published standalone product pages for these new flagship devices yet, we know the details regarding the offers on the table.

Verizon will offer new and existing customers (adding a new line on the Unlimited Ultimate plan) an iPhone 15 Pro for free or up to $1,000 off any iPhone 15 model -- applied in bill credits -- with the trade-in of an older iPhone handset.

In addition, existing customers can take advantage of a discount of up to $830 applied to any iPhone 15 model with the trade-in of an older device on eligible plans.

Discounts will also be available for the Apple Watch Series 9.

Announced at Samsung Unpacked, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is one of the South Korean tech giant's latest flagship mobile devices, alongside the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has a 3.4-inch "Flex Window" panel, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 mobile processing chip, and up to 512GB storage. Four colors are available: mint green, lavender, cream, or graphite.

You can pick up the device for free if you trade in an eligible device (up to $1,000 in bill credits) and sign up for a 5G Unlimited Plus plan.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, also introduced at Samsung Unpacked, is subject to a deal at Verizon.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes with an inner 7.6-inch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 mobile processor, and up to 512GB storage. The device is available in three colors outside of ordering directly from Samsung (where two exclusive colors are available): icy blue, phantom black, and cream.

Trading in an older device and upgrading grants you a discount of up to $1,000, applied in credit over 36 months.

A top deal at Verizon is for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max. You can pick up Apple's smartphone with a discount of up to $1,000, as long as you're happy to trade in an old device.

Discounts vary depending on what device you are trading in. To take advantage of this deal, you will need to sign up for a new line. Trade-in credit is applied over 36 months. Furthermore, you can save up to $200 off a new iPad when you sign up.

If you're in the market for a new Apple smartphone, Verizon will give you an Apple iPhone 14 Plus with a discount of up to $899 (via credit) if you sign up for an Unlimited plan.

The smartphone can be picked up in six colors and with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB SSD storage.

Once you've purchased your new smartphone, subscribers can also take up the offer of a free NFL Sunday ticket, from YouTube and YouTube TV, as long as you also agree to a new line on an eligible plan (Unlimited Plus).

The Google Pixel Fold has quirks, but ZDNET experts still consider the device a worthy competitor to established Samsung smartphone lines. While there are limited multitasking capabilities, this device is for you if you want a wide aspect ratio and reasonable battery life on a foldable phone.

Over at Verizon, you can enjoy up to $1,000 off the typical $1,800 RRP when you trade in a suitable device. You can also take advantage of a free NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV, on the proviso you purchase a new phone and sign up to an eligible line.

Another deal for Samsung fans is for the Samsung Galaxy S23+, one of the South Korean tech giant's most popular smartphones.

Verizon will give you up to $1,000 in trade-in credits (applied over 36 months).

If you buy the device, you can receive discounts on a Galaxy Tab S9+, although a new line is required. You can also take advantage of a free NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV, as long as you purchase a new phone and suitable line.

What is the best Verizon deal?

The best deals at Verizon are for the new Apple iPhone 15. Verizon is offering a range of promotions for the flagship range, available to order from Friday, September 15. These include up to $1,000 off a new model, applied in bill credit, when you trade in a suitable device.

How did we choose these Verizon deals?

When we chose our top Verizon deals, we wanted to include options based on the following criteria:

  • Value: The deal had to offer good value for money, especially when it comes to trade-in offers or discounts applied to new handsets, tablets, or entertainment products.
  • Affordability: The economy is facing an uncertain time, and when we experience this type of disruption, it is sometimes important to reduce our expenses as much as possible. With this in mind, we have included products suitable for a range of budgets.
  • Variety: We require a diverse range of products to be available, suiting different users and their needs.
  • Free products: Devices drop in value over time, and in order to offload excess stock, some carriers will launch time-sensitive deals, giving subscribers free products in exchange for signing up for a new contract.
  • Events: It's always worth checking retailers after a major event, such as Samsung Unpacked. You will often find that deals will be launched just after, luring customers to agree to preorder their new handset in return for discounts and free storage upgrades.
