More than two-and-a-half thousand short .uk domain names will become available in May, the UK internet registry Nominet has said.

On Tuesday, Nominet said the 'Landrush phase' for the 2,640 mostly two-letter .co.uk, .net.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk domain names (PDF) would open at midday on 23 May and close at midday on 15 June.

Those wishing to grab their short domain name, with one example being 'gm.org.uk', will be able to pay £10 plus VAT to apply for it. If no-one else applies for the same domain name, the application will be approved on 23 June.

If others do also apply, the domain name will go to the highest bidder in an auction, which will take place from 20 July. Any domain names for which there have been no landrush applications will become available on a first-come-first-served basis on 27 June.

The rules for the process are on Nominet's website.
