Singapore - According to a newly released report by the Dell'Oro Group, Nortel Networks has captured the top position in the worldwide market for Layer 4-7 Web switches ahead of competitors Cisco and Foundry Networks.

"These numbers further affirm our leadership in powering the high-performance Internet and speeding the delivery of content to millions of Internet users worldwide," said Clarence Chandran, chief operating officer for Nortel Networks.

Nortel Networks' market shares for both Alteon modular and fixed Web switches represent the top leadership position in their respective categories. For worldwide Gigabit Ethernet fixed and modular port shipments, Nortel Networks led all others with market shares of 74.3 and 43.2 percent respectively.

In addition, Dell'Oro reported that momentum continues for Nortel Networks' Layer-3 Ethernet switch. Since the general availability of the Passport 8600 routing switch in the second quarter this year, Nortel Networks nearly doubled its market share in the Layer-3 modular Ethernet switching space to 15.8 percent. The Passport 8600 is a key part of Nortel Networks' effort to build a strong enterprise and metro Optical Ethernet foundation for content delivery growth.
