Matthew is a professional naval architect by day and a mobile gadgeteer at all other times. He purchases his own devices and then sells them on Swappa to buy more. Many other devices are sent for review on a typical 30-day or long-term loan basis and then returned to the carrier or manufacturer.

RIM officially announces the BlackBerry Bold and a $150 million development fund

There have been rumors of a new BlackBerry design, often labeled the BlackBerry 9000 series, and today RIM posted the official announcement of the BlackBerry Bold smartphone that will be coming this Summer to a carrier near you. RIM also announced a US$150 million mobile applications and services development fund similar to what Apple has done with its developer fund a few months ago. RIM is serious about the smartphone market and isn't about to give up to Apple, Microsoft, or Nokia anytime soon.

As we have seen in recent analyst reports, RIM's marketshare is increasing as they continue to support and promote consumer-focused features like video capture, enjoyable web browsing, and style. RIM is now getting closer and closer to launching their first ever touch screen-enabled device, the BlackBerry Storm, and CrackBerry.com has the latest news on this device that appears to be coming soon to Verizon.

Widespread BlackBerry data outage reported, is it time to move on?

I posted my first impressions of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 earlier today and then planned to spend a lot of time using the device over the next few days. I am at the Microsoft Mobius event in Seattle that is a gathering of some of the greatest mobile minds and was trying to show the Bold 9700 to some folks, but I couldn't get a connection. I then later read on Boy Genius Report that BIS was down across the globe today. As of this moment it still is not working for me and has been down for hours.

First impressions of the T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700

It was a year ago this month that the RIM BlackBerry Bold was launched and I purchased one from AT&T while on a business trip (see my first impressions). The Bold had the BEST QWERTY keyboard available at that time, but that came at the price of width so the phone was a bit chunky. We now see RIM making some design improvements with the BlackBerry Bold 9700 that is launching first with T-Mobile and AT&T here in the US. I have spent a couple of days with the T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9700 and think it may be the best front facing QWERTY BlackBerry device on the market.

Celio announces REDFLY driver for BlackBerry coming soon

I am a fan of the Celio REDFLY Mobile Companion and I do use it with my Windows Mobile devices while I wait for continued driver support for other platforms. Today, Celio Corp announced their drivers for BlackBerry devices would be coming mid-Q4 2009 so this opens up a whole new world for enterprise customers. I think Celio did the right thing in targeting the BlackBerry platform after Windows Mobile because these type of people are a perfect fit for the REDFLY due to the ease of sending a REDFLY Mobile Companion out in the field with a smartphone.

Can a BlackBerry watch succeed where SPOT watches failed?

I still have a few MSN Direct SPOT watches floating around at home, but find I rarely even wear a watch and just rely on my mobile phones for time and date information. Crackberry.com looks to have the first images and information on the upcoming BlackBerry Watch. This Bluetooth accessory will connect to your BlackBerry device and act as a viewable terminal for specific data. Much like the SPOT watches of old, it is designed to give you quick glanceable access to data without having to pull out your phone. Honestly though, does it really take that much effor to pull out your phone? If there is a piece of data you want to view more of or respond to then this watch actually introduces an unnecessary step in the process, right?

BlackBerry Desktop for Mac now available with iTunes sync capability

Last week we heard the news that BlackBerry Desktop for Mac was coming soon and then a few days later RIM download this new Mac client. BlackBerry Desktop for Mac supports syncing contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes with your BlackBerry running OS 4.2 or later. The Mac applications it works with include iCal, Address Book, Microsoft Entourage and others. BB Media Sync is also included for iTunes syncing functionality.

Electric Pocket brings BugMe! to the BlackBerry

One of my favorite applications from way back when I had Palm OS devices was BugMe! This application allowed me to capture handwritten notes and set custom alarms. Today, we see that Electric Pocket released a version of BugMe! for BlackBerry devices and brings that same functionality we saw over 10 years ago, along with improvements reflecting today's technology. BugMe! for BlackBerry is available in the BlackBerry App World store for $2.99 and there is a free "3 note" trial available.

BlackBerry Bold coming to AT&T on November 4th

The BlackBerry Bold is available now in select countries, but there have been a few delays getting it out in the U.S. It looks like that is no longer the case as AT&T just announced that the Bold will be available on Tuesday, 4 November, for as low as US$299.99 (with qualifying plan and contract).

CTIA 09: Hands-on walk through BlackBerry App World, 30% of apps are free

We knew the BlackBerry App World launch was coming soon and rumors had it for 1 April. While in a conversation with fellow writers at the Showstoppers event an email appeared on my phone that the BlackBerry App World was available and ready for installation. I pulled out the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8900 and quickly installed the new application suite to give it a run through.
