Matthew Miller started using mobile devices in 1997 and has been writing news, reviews, and opinion pieces ever since. Matthew started using mobile devices with a US Robotics Pilot 1000 and has owned hundreds of devices running Palm, Linux,… Symbian, Newton, BlackBerry, iOS, Android, webOS, Windows Mobile, and Windows Phone operating systems. His current collection includes the latest and greatest foldables, wearables, and more, along with classic devices like the Apple Newton MessagePad 2100 and Sony CLIE UX50. Matthew can be found on various social networks under the user name of "palmsolo."

Matthew is a professional naval architect by day and a mobile gadgeteer at all other times. He purchases his own devices and then sells them on Swappa to buy more. Many other devices are sent for review on a typical 30-day or long-term loan basis and then returned to the carrier or manufacturer.

Zune HD to get Smart DJ, new video codec support, Facebook in early 2010

My inbox was crazy last week during CES and as I was cleaning it out early this morning I saw an email from the Zune PR team talking about some updates coming soon. Microsoft was actually showing off demos of this at CES, but my schedule was already packed so I didn't get a chance to see these new features. Sometime this spring we will see Smart DJ and additional video content support with Facebook coming during the early part of this year.

Hands-on video with Facebook on the Zune HD

Microsoft released the free Facebook for Zune HD a couple of days ago, but there were some permission settings issues. The app now runs just fine and as you can see in my video it is quite a capable mobile application.

Five reasons why Nokia should consider buying Yahoo

Nokia makes some awesome devices and I continue to be impressed by their innovation and functionality. However, as we saw last year Nokia is expanding their service offerings, largely through aquisitions. I think Nokia will continue with their hardware, but their future focus on services may be where they focus a lot of effort and IMHO is actually much more intriguing. I just read an interesting article by Stephen Wellman over at Information Week where he give five reasons that Nokia should buy Yahoo.

What happens to my mobile services if Microsoft buys Yahoo!?

The big news of the day is obviously the Microsoft bid for Yahoo! and this immediately prompted me to wonder how this would impact my mobile usage of Yahoo's services. I currently use Flickr for my online photo repository and mobile upload tool. I have a couple of Yahoo! email accounts and belong to a few Yahoo! Groups. I also enjoy using the Yahoo! Go services such as email, photos, sports, news, maps, and search on my mobile devices and find it to be one of the best mobile services clients that is available today. Lastly, I am a Yahoo! Music unlimited subscriber and have unlimited subscription music playing on my Windows Mobile and S60 devices. In addition, Yahoo! services work quite well on Macs and many Microsoft services are not fully supported on Macs so this is a concern of mine as well.

Google drops Jaiku, can Nokia please pick it up and run with it?

Larry mentioned a list of Google services that are shutting down, but one he did not mention that is also being let go by Google is Jaiku. From what I understand Google will release the Jaiku code under the open source Apache license, so that somebody else can take it where they want to. I think Nokia should pick it up and carry it since it is highly focused on S60 users and would fit perfectly into their focus on providing services.

Need a Facebook client for your Android device? Check out Babbler and Bloo

I tried using the fBook client that was available early on the T-Mobile G1 Google Android device and all that application did was provide a way to access the Facebook mobile website. I then purchased very lame FriendMobilizer client hoping it would give me a better Facebook experience and it is actually more limited and less useful than the mobile website. Last night I read about Babbler on the jkOnTheRun site and after checking out their website I immediately paid the $1.49 to get the application onto my T-Mobile G1. I also ran across the new Bloo Facebook application for Android devices that also looks quite promising.

Should Villanueva have posted to Twitter during NBA halftime?

Twitter popularity is growing and you can now find several celebrities and sports stars using this social networking service. It seems that Charlie Villanueva took it a bit far last week as he posted a Tweet at halftime of a NBA game. Villanueva is a player for the Milwaukee Bucks and the coach wasn't too happy with the Tweet being made during the game as he wants players to stay focused on the game and not be distracted. Twitter definitely can be a distraction and I have to make sure to turn off the stream when I need to crack down and get work done.

MobileTechRoundup show #104; iPhone is returned

I give listeners my last word on my iPhone ownership over the last two weeks in MobileTechRoundup show #104. Kevin asked some good questions and there are definitely reasons to like the iPhone. We had a listener email about what non-camera options were available and after hashing it over we realized there really are not that many choices available for people, but our recommendation is for a sound device. James discussed issues with GPS on the BlackBerry 8830 and questioned what in the heck Verizon is doing. We all have Skype on our Nokia N800 devices and James and Kevin even used Skype without a WiFi connection using iSkoot.

Share your cameraphone pics everywhere with ShoZu

As a father of three active daughters, I like to use my camera-enabled phones to capture moments of their lives when I don't have a dedicated camera in hand. I upload these pics to Flickr, Vox, my blog, my Facebook site, and sometimes my TextAmerica site. I have used the native utilities on S60 devices, Vox upload tool, special email address (WordPress functionality), Facebook utility on a BlackBerry, and ShoZu in the past, but am pleased that something major was just updated that brings all these various tools into a single package. With the latest version of ShoZu you can now easily send your latest snapshot to all these services, and a lot more, with a single upload via MMS or email. This will save me lots of time and also allow me to post to several sites at once.
