Last week's technology failure at a major FAA facility caused air traffic delays throughout the country and highlighted the agency's poor computing practices. Unlike major corporations and utilities, the FAA operates its air traffic control system with minimal redundancy using a "fix-on-fail" policy.
Windows Live FolderShare: unacceptable 3-day outage
Microsoft's FolderShare is a great service for synchronizing files across computers. As with any backup service, reliability is a critical user requirement for FolderShare. For this reason, I was rather shocked to learn of an planned three-day service outage starting tomorrow evening.
Flickr down...outage handled responsibly
Flickr, which is Yahoo's photo-sharing site, went down for two hours of maintenance today, and didn't come back until five hours later. Although the outage was serious, and the site stayed down for hours beyond the original estimates, the problem was handled responsibly and well.
